Large Marijuana Farm

Large Marijuana Plantation

With California, Colorado, and a number of large states adopting medical marijuana legislation, the overall perception of marijuana has generally changed. In the past few years, we’ve seen more and more mid- to large-sized business become involved in medical marijuana growing, production, and retail. Larger companies like Cannabis Sciences has been actively acquiring medical marijuana research facilities and dispensaries. This poses a question, does marijuana agriculture and retail still have room for the small-business man?

These large marijuana and hemp conglomerates do provide access to increased funding, and should hopefully yield more research, discussion, as well as introduce an industry to a struggling economy. That said, I’ll throw it to an analogy, home-cooking is always better than McDonald’s.

This is what really scares me, and we have seen mass production go horribly wrong, just ask the Canadians up north. Today’s system relies on co-ops and traditional farming, and what we have seen in states like California and Colorado is successful horticulture and quality strains. Growers should also be concerned by this, because it either means they’ll be bought out and work for these conglomerates, or they will soon find themselves wiped out, as commercial production out paces them.

This sort of commercial development will very likely take away from what many of us have grown to love. The upside is that large medical marijuana conglomerates will introduce a taboo to the mainstream. I still have a very difficult time grasping the idea, and figuring out whether or not this is something we should be doing. Truth is, this is probably where the entire industry will go, just think Marlborough or Pepsi. We’ve got a long way to go and we’ll see what happens.
